Some journeys begin with a plan. Others begin with a calling.
My journey to Hemkund Sahib, nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 4,633 metres, was not just a trek – it was an experience that tested patience, faith and surrender. Surrounded by seven snow-covered peaks and a serene glacial lake, Hemkund Sahib feels like a place where time slows down and the soul finally listens.

The Beginning of the Hemkund Sahib Journey
I I travelled to Hemkund Sahib by Gurudwara bus along with my cousin’s brother and a few close friends. There was excitement, laughter, and a shared sense of devotion as we made our way through the winding mountain roads. However, nature had its own plans. Due to continuous heavy rainfalls, we were forced to halt at Govindghat for two days. The wait was difficult – being so close to the journey’s starting point yet unable to move forward. But as they say, when the desire to go is true, the calling comes on its own. During those two days , we attended kirtan, spent time in prayer, and quietly ,placed our faith in the journey ahead. On the third morning, the rain finally stopped. The skies cleared , and it felt like a silent blessing – a sign that it was time to move forward.

Starting the Hemkund Sahib Trek: Letting Go of the World
From Govindghat, the trek begins with a 13 km trail to Ghangaria, the last settlement before Hemkund Sahib. As we started walking, something unexpected happened –mobile network slowly disappeared . No calls, no messages, no connection to the outside world .
At first , it felt unsettling. But soon, it became liberating.
Without phones, we began to truly feel nature – the sound of flowing rivers , the rhythm of our breath , the cold mountain air brushing against our faces. The trek quietly taught us an important lesson: sometimes, to connect with yourself, you must first disconnect from everything else.

The Final Climb to Hemkund Sahib
The final 6 km ascent from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib is steep and physically demanding . Every step required effort, and the thin air made even simple movements exhausting . Yet , the sight of pilgrims , supporting each other – gave us strength
When we finally reached Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, words failed us.
Despite the exhaustion and aching legs, a deep sense of peace washed over us . Standing beside the sacred lake, surrounded by snow and silence, felt overwhelming in the most beautiful way . It was as if all worries, fears, and noise had been left behind on the trail.
